How should it be displayed?

Quick answer: the model should be planned around its longest dimension, projecting parts and preferred viewing angle. Ships and science-fiction vehicles often look compact in photographs but use considerable width or depth once wings, masts, antennas and side scenes are installed.

How much safety clearance is useful?
Allow room around the most fragile projecting pieces, not only around the central body. A model that technically fits may still be vulnerable in a corridor or beside a door. The display should also support the weight without forcing delicate sections to carry a load they were not designed for.
Where should included characters be placed?
Keep minifigures close enough to explain the story but avoid arranging a dense row directly in front of the vehicle. A small scene to one side preserves the main outline and usually photographs better. If play features matter, leave doors, hatches and removable sections accessible.
